There are no cures for autism and there is no specific “one size fits all” treatments.

Your doctor may be able to point you in the right direction in what treatment option that may work for your child.

Some treatment options may include:

Behavior and communication therapies – Many programs have been designed to help address the range of social, language and behavioral difficulties with autism. There are programs to help reduce problems with behavior and teaching new skills. Other programs teach children how to act in a social situations or how to communicate with others. Children do not outgrow autism, they learn how to function with their autism disorder.

Education therapies – Autism children function better with a structured education program. These programs often include a team of specialists and activities to improve on social skills, communication and behavior. When preschool children get early intervention they show a good progress.

Drug therapies – There are no medications the can improve on the signs of autism but there are medications to help control symptoms. Antidepressants can be prescribed for anxiety and antipsychotic drugs are used in severe behavioral problems.

Since autism is a devastating and incurable disease, many parents search for alternative therapies. There have been some studies that report good results with special diets. Several diets suggest restriction of food allergens; probiotics; yeast-free diet; gluten-free and casein-free diet and dietary supplements.

Creative therapies – Parents have chosen to take part in educational and medical intervention with art and music therapy or sensory integration, which focuses on reducing the child’s sensitivity to touch or sound.

Chelation therapy- This treatment is recommended by few doctors and parents. This therapy is to remove the mercury from the body. There have been no studies linking mercury with autism. This chelation therapy has not been shown to be safe or effective treatment.

Autism is a pervasive development disorder, it affects the way a person communicates and relates to other people. Children affected by this disorder have problems with the understanding of reality, interacting with people, places, events, sounds and lights, and they can also have problems with their imagination.

It is known that children affected by autism also have a limited range of interests, and about 75% of them can have mental retardation as well.

The symptoms of autism usually appear before a child is 3 years old, and last all his life. These symptoms can vary, they can be sometimes mild, or very severe.

There can appear difficulty with verbal communication, the inability to take part to a conversation even when the child has the ability to speak, difficulty to interact with people and with the surrounding reality, lack of imagination, inability to make friends and the preference to play alone.

We can also mention the preoccupation with unusual objects or parts of objects, an unreasonable insistence on following routines in detail, difficulty with non-verbal communication and repetitive body movements or patterns of behavior (for example head banging, flapping, spinning).

There exists a form of autism called savantism, and those affected by this illness have exceptional skills in specific areas like music, art, numbers, and are able to perform these skills without any practice.

A child could be suspected of autism, if he does not gesture, such as point or wave, does not babble or coo by 12 months of age, does not say single words by 16 months, or does not say two-word phrases on his own by 24 months. Another sign of autism, a sign that can appear at any age is the loss of any language and social skills.

The cause of autism in not known, but there are some possible factors that may lead to autism. Researchers believe that some people can have a genetic predisposition to autism, it is possible that this condition to be passed on from parents to children. It is possible that in some children, environmental factors to play a role too.

There are also other theories that say that antibodies inappropriately produced by the body’s immune system may attack the brain of children, causing autism. It was also said that it is possible that children with autism have abnormal timing of the growth of their brains.

It appeared the question if some vaccines can cause autism or other kind of behavioral disorder. Some parents of children with autism suspected that there is a link between measles, mumps, rubella vaccine and autism, but there wasn’t found any convincing evidence.

Autism is a disorder that appears 4 times more often in boys than in girls, and there are about 10 – 20 cases of autism to every 10,000 people.

In order to diagnose autism, if the symptoms are present, the doctor will perform a complete medical history and physical examination. Then, he will do some tests, like X-rays and blood tests, to find out if the symptoms are caused by a physical disorder.

If there isn’t found a physical disorder, the child is sent to a specialist in childhood development disorders, trained to diagnose and treat autism. The doctor analyzes the child’s level of development, speech and behavior, and often can ask the parents of the child, or other adults that are familiar with him about the symptoms that they found.

At this moment there is no cure for autism, but there is treatment that can reduce undesirable behaviors, and allow relatively normal development in the child.

Treatment can include medications in order to treat specific symptoms, like anxiety, hyperactivity and behavior that may result in injury, there are also necessary therapies that increase the child’s functional abilities, and strategies for supporting positive behavior. The special education is structured in order to satisfy the child’s unique educational needs.

It is known that autism cannot be prevented or cured. Early diagnosis and treatment is very important, in order to maximize the ability to speak, learn and function.

The severity of symptoms varies very much, and improves with intervention or as the children age. Some people with autism are able to have a normal or almost normal life, but it is known that many children with autism do not develop enough functional and communication skills to live independently as adults.

Researchers are looking for genes that may increase the risk of autism, and are studying abnormalities of the brain that can cause autism. Other studies are looking after possible biologic markers present at birth that may show a child has a risk for developing autism, or are analyzing how different brain regions develop and function in relation to each other and how can the alteration of this relationship cause symptoms of autism.

Autism is a disorder too affects the individual’s communicative and language ability. This disease often affects children before their third birthdays. The exact suggest of the disorder is yet to be substantiated by medical science. Autism makes the autistic patient to speak incoherently and continuously display behaviors that are inimical to common behavior. Autism Treatment Centers

Thus, autism symptoms are related to those of other Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). It will interest you to know that in autism treatment centers, this disease is also known as autism spectrum disorder. Autism cure is still eluding researches that have been carried out for many years. However, autism is treatable because some of the risk factors have been identified.

Among other risk factors, it has been diagnosed that the autistic lacks certain vitamins and minerals in their body. To be specific, there has been low level of minerals like magnesium, calcium, chromium and folic acid in the blood of children with autism. Also, vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin B, etc are seen to be lacking in the blood of those who are diagnosed with the disorder. Autism Treatment Centers

To handle this situation, autism research papers presented in the past have revealed that children and adults with autism have shown significant improvement when supplements of vitamins and minerals are used in treating them. Yes, when the children were treated with thylglycine and niacin supplements. Autism Treatment Centers

In some autism treatment options, oral secretin is administered to the patient with a combination of vitamins and minerals are very effective in treating and controlling autism. They can be termed as Autism Spectrum Disorder/Cures used these days. Don’t let your love ones suffer anymore!
There is an estimation of three to six of very 1,000 children have autism. Autism is a brain disorder associated with developmental matters mainly in communication and social interaction. The disorder affects boys a greater amount of often than girls. Signs of their disorder largely give the impression before age 3. Diagnosis and treatment has greatly improved in the past few decades, however, autism cannot be cured. It persists throughout life. Signs Of Autism Toddler

The recent increase in the number of autism cases in the United States may be more the result of improved diagnosis and changes in diagnostic criteria. Severity of symptoms is different in each case. Some children are able to grow up and live independently, while others may always need supportive living and working environments.

Early, intensive treatment can make a difference. Signs and symptoms of autism include:

• Fails to respond to his or her name

• Has poor eye contact

• Appears not to hear you at times

• Resists cuddling and holding

• Appears unaware of others’ feelings

• Seems to prefer playing alone – - retreats into his or her “own world”

• Starts talking later than other children

• Loses previously acquired ability to say words or sentences

• Does not make eye contact when making requests

• Speaks with an abnormal tone or rhythm – may use a singsong voice or robot-like speech

• Can’t start a conversation or keep one going

• May repeat words or phrases verbatim, but does not understand how to use them

• Performs repetitive movements like rocking, spinning or hand-flapping

• Develops specific routines or rituals

• Becomes disturbed at the slightest change in routines or rituals

• Moves constantly

• May be fascinated by parts of an object, such as the spinning wheels of a toy car

• May be unusually sensitive to light, sound and touch Signs Of Autism Toddler

Some children with autism become more engaged with others as they mature. They may show less marked disturbances in behavior. Those with the least severe impairments may eventually lead normal or near-normal lives. Others continue to have severe impairments in language or social skills.

The adolescent years may mean a worsening of behavior problems. The majority of children with autism are slow to acquire new knowledge or skills. However, there is an extremely small number of children with autism who have exceptional skills in a specific are such as art or math. Signs Of Autism Toddler

There is no identifiable cause for autism. Researchers believe the disorder is related to abnormalities in several regions of the brain. Researchers have also identified a number of gene defects associated with autism. Don’t let your child suffer anymore! Lead your child out of his world through Signs Of Autism Toddler program now!

Definition
Autism s a complex developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, although it is sometimes diagnosed much later. It affects the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills.

Common features of autism include impaired social interactions, impaired verbal and nonverbal communication, problems processing information from the senses, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior.

Alternative Names
Pervasive developmental disorder – autism

Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Autism is a physical condition linked to abnormal biology and chemistry in the brain. The exact causes of these abnormalities remain unknown, but this is a very active area of research. There are probably a combination of factors that lead to autism.

Genetic factors seem to be important. For example, identical twins are much more likely than fraternal twins or siblings to both have autism. Similarly, language abnormalities are more common in relatives of autistic children. Chromosomal abnormalities and other neurological problems are also more common in families with autism.

A number of other possible causes have been suspected, but not proven. They involve digestive tract changes, diet, mercury poisoning, vaccine sensitivity, and the body’s inefficient use of vitamins and minerals.

The exact number of children with autism is not known. A report released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that autism and related disorders are more common than previously thought, although it is unclear if this is due to an increasing rate of the illness or an increased ability to diagnose the illness.

Autism affects boys 3 to 4 times more often than girls. Family income, education, and lifestyle do not seem to affect the risk of autism.

Some parents have heard that the MMR Vaccine that children receive may cause autism. This theory was based, in part, on two facts. First, the incidence of autism has increased steadily since around the same time the MMR vaccine was introduced. Second, children with the regressive form of autism (a type of autism that develops after a period of normal development) tend to start to show symptoms around the time the MMR vaccine is given. This is likely a coincidence due to the age of children at the time they receive this vaccine.

Several major studies have found NO connection between the vaccine and autism, however. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention report that there is no proven link between autism and the MMR vaccine.

Some doctors attribute the increased incidence in autism to newer definitions of autism. The term “autism” now includes a wider spectrum of children. For example, a child who is diagnosed with high-functioning autism today may have been thought to simply be odd or strange 30 years ago.

Symptoms
Most parents of autistic children suspect that something is wrong by the time the child is 18 months old and seek help by the time the child is 2. Children with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interactions, and pretend play. In some, aggression — toward others or self — may be present.

Some children with autism appear normal before age 1 or 2 and then suddenly “regress” and lose language or social skills they had previously gained. This is called the regressive type of autism.

People with autism may perform repeated body movements, show unusual attachments to objects or have unusual distress when routines are changed. Individuals may also experience sensitivities in the senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, or taste. Such children, for example, will refuse to wear “itchy” clothes and become unduly distressed if forced because of the sensitivity of their skin. Some combination of the following areas may be affected in varying degrees.

Communication

Lack of pointing to direct others’ attention to objects (occurs in the first 14 months of life) Does not adjust gaze to look at objects that others are looking at

Cannot start or sustain a social conversation

Develops language slowly or not at all

Repeats words or memorized passages, such as commercials

Does not refer to self correctly (for example, says “you want water” when the child means “I want water”)

Uses nonsense rhyming Communicates with gestures instead of words

Social interaction

Shows a lack of empathy

Does not make friends

Is withdrawn

Prefers to spend time alone, rather than with others

May not respond to eye contact or smiles

May actually avoid eye contact

May treat others as if they are objects

Does not play interactive games

Response to sensory information

Has heightened or low senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell, or taste

Seems to have a heightened or low response to pain

Signs and tests
All children should have routine developmental exams by their pediatrician. Further testing may be needed if there is concern on the part of the clinician or the parents. This is particularly true whenever a child fails to meet any of the following language milestones:

Babbling by 12 months

Gesturing (pointing, waving bye-bye) by 12 months

Single words by 16 months

Two-word spontaneous phrases by 24 months (not just echoing)

Loss of any language or social skills at any age.

The other pervasive developmental disorders include: An evaluation of autism will often include a complete physical and Neurological examination. It may also include a specific diagnostic screening tool, such as:

Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R)

Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS)

Childhood Autism rating Scale (CARS)

Gilliam Autism Rating Scale

Pervasive Developmental Disorders Screening Test-Stage 3

Children with known or suspected autism will often have genetic testing (looking for chromosome abnormalities) and perhaps metabolic testing.

Autism encompasses a broad spectrum of symptoms. Therefore, a single, brief evaluation cannot predict a child’s true abilities. Ideally, a team of different specialists will evaluate the child. They might evaluate speech, language, communication, thinking abilities, motor skills, success at school, and other factors.

Sometimes people are reluctant to have a child diagnosed because of concerns about labeling the child. However, failure to make a diagnosis can lead to failure to get the treatment and services the child needs.

Treatment
An early, intensive, appropriate treatment program will greatly improve the outlook for most young children with autism. Most programs will build on the interests of the child in a highly structured schedule of constructive activities. Visual aids are often helpful.

Treatment is most successful when geared toward the child’s particular needs. An experienced specialist or team should design the individualized program. A variety of effective therapies are available, including applied behavior analysis (ABA), speech-language therapy, medications, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Sensory integration and vision therapy are also common, but there is little research supporting their effectiveness. The best treatment plan may use a combination of techniques.

DIET
Some children with autism appear to respond to a gluten free or a casein-free diet. Gluten is found in foods containing wheat, rye, and barley. Casein is found in milk, cheese, and other dairy products. Not all experts agree that dietary changes will make a difference, and not all reports studying this method have shown positive results.

OTHER APPROACHES
Beware that there are widely publicized treatments for autism that do not have scientific support, and reports of “miracle cures” that do not live up to expectations. If your child has autism, it may be helpful to talk with other parents of children with autism, talk with autism specialists, and follow the progress of research in this area, which is rapidly developing.

At one time, there was enormous excitement about using secretin infusions. Now, after many studies have been conducted in many laboratories, it’s possible that secretin is not effective after all, but research is.

Complications
Autism can be associated with other disorders that affect the brain, such as Tuberous Sclerosis, Mental retardation or Fragile X syndrome.

Some people with autism will develop Seizures.

The stresses of dealing with autism can lead to social and emotional complications for family and caregivers, as well as the person with autism.
