There are no cures for autism and there is no specific “one size fits all” treatments.

Your doctor may be able to point you in the right direction in what treatment option that may work for your child.

Some treatment options may include:

Behavior and communication therapies – Many programs have been designed to help address the range of social, language and behavioral difficulties with autism. There are programs to help reduce problems with behavior and teaching new skills. Other programs teach children how to act in a social situations or how to communicate with others. Children do not outgrow autism, they learn how to function with their autism disorder.

Education therapies – Autism children function better with a structured education program. These programs often include a team of specialists and activities to improve on social skills, communication and behavior. When preschool children get early intervention they show a good progress.

Drug therapies – There are no medications the can improve on the signs of autism but there are medications to help control symptoms. Antidepressants can be prescribed for anxiety and antipsychotic drugs are used in severe behavioral problems.

Since autism is a devastating and incurable disease, many parents search for alternative therapies. There have been some studies that report good results with special diets. Several diets suggest restriction of food allergens; probiotics; yeast-free diet; gluten-free and casein-free diet and dietary supplements.

Creative therapies – Parents have chosen to take part in educational and medical intervention with art and music therapy or sensory integration, which focuses on reducing the child’s sensitivity to touch or sound.

Chelation therapy- This treatment is recommended by few doctors and parents. This therapy is to remove the mercury from the body. There have been no studies linking mercury with autism. This chelation therapy has not been shown to be safe or effective treatment.

Autism understanding begins when a person realizes that autism is a disorder that affects people differently. Although autism affects the normal functioning of a person’s perception, attention and thoughts, autism is not characterized by one type of perception, attention and thought. Instead, it covers a broad spectrum of disorders that may be mild or severe. Due to the fact that autism is such a complex disorder, medical research is still in the process of understanding how it develops and why it affects certain individuals.

One particular medical project with the aim to find better autism understanding by identifying the gene that causes autism, is the 5 year Autism Genome Project (AGP). So far, phase I of the AGP has identified a gene and parts of a chromosome to be linked with the occurrence of autism. The findings of this particular autism study was published online in the Nature Genetics February 18, 2007 issue.

The Autism Genome Project is a global research consortium that is funded by Autism Speaks and the National Institute of Health. Autism Speaks is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to raising the awareness of autism and raising funds to help research it.

The AGP involves more than 120 scientists from 50 institutions in 19 countries around the world. The researchers who have collaborated on the project combined their autism expertise, and shared all of the data and samples they had to help identify autism-related genes.

As was mentioned, phase I of this project began 5 years ago in 2002, and it allowed the team of medical experts to gain autism understanding by identifying a single specific gene known as neurexil 1, and part of chromosome 11 which could likely be the cause of autism in children. These findings are based on the largest autism genome scan that has ever been done.

Scientists have known for many years that autism is a genetic disorder, but only until the AGP have they been able to use special “gene chip” technology to search for genetic similarities in autistics. Genetic similarities were found in practically all of the autistic individuals within each of the twelve hundred families that that were made part of the project. The scientists also checked the DNA of each family to look for copy number variations that are believed might be connected to autism and similar disorders.

What the researches discovered in their study was that one particular gene known as neurexin 1 plays a significant role with glutamate; a neurotransmitter that has been formerly linked to autism. Researchers also uncovered an area of chromosome 11 that is suspected to contain a gene that may be involved in the occurrence of autism. However, this particular gene in chromosome 11 has yet to be identified which is required for further autism understanding.

Based on previous research, and the research that has been uncovered by the study so far, scientists speculate that there may be as many as 6 main genes and 30 additional genes linked to autism. However, these numbers are only theories, as scientists point out that the actual number of genes could exceed their theory. Nevertheless, despite the number of genes that may be involved, researchers admit that it is still far too early to dictate how these genes may be responsible for autism.

Currently, phase II of the Autism Genome Project has been announced. The promising discoveries found in phase I makes scientists hopeful that discovering the genes that cause autism will provide new steps toward autism understanding. With greater understanding, more effective methods of diagnosis, preventing and treating the disorder can be taken.

Autism is one of the most misunderstood situations that a child could deal with. Those overly do suffer a vague understanding of the understanding could often assume that it easily is in its severe form. In actuality, autism comes in different forms including a less impactful but no moderated serious manner. Mild Autism

This variant of autism is able to be identified a form of mild autism. When a child suffers for mild autism, the impact is still severe because it will dramatically burn the way the child can employ in his life activities. That is why a better arrangement of the condition is needed. What exactly is autism? Autism can be defined as a very misunderstood cognitive disorder that does require professional treatment in order to overcome.

Specifically, this is a condition where brain development is marred and the child (or, in some cases, the adult) will be limited in the way he/she will interact or communicate with others. Often, the behavior of a child with autism will embody a restricted and withdrawn attitude towards others and their environment. There are many different signs and symptoms of autism. The most common symptoms would be impairment with speech, communications, social interactions, and behavioral patterns that are oddly repetitious.

With severe forms of autism, such behavior will be extremely severe and indicative through extreme withdrawal from social interactions. With the mild form of the condition, the symptoms would not be as pronounced although they would definitely be quite clear and visible. Generally, the problems related to autism are most evident when the afflicted person is a child and mild autism will sometimes dissipate as the child grows into adulthood. However, there are clear instances where autism remains well into adulthood. Mild Autism

Regardless of whether the individual’s condition is considered severe or mild autism is irrelevant. Anyone who is showing signs of autism will need to undergo treatment for the condition. This is very important for a child suffering from mild autism or the severe form of the condition to be provided with the proper treatment that can help alleviate the condition.

Some parents may become nervous at this suggestion because they may assume that treatment involves the use of psychotropics. Thankfully, with mild autism, it is possible to treat the conditional behaviorally and avoid the trapping of psychiatric drugs. Counseling, therapy, behavior modification, and special education programs will be required in order to reverse the impact of autism in a child. Mild Autism

Through the step-by-step process of altering the child’s ability and comfort to interact with others, the impact of autism can be reversed. Of course, this may take quite a bit of time since the condition is a serious one. No one is inferring there are easy cures and patience will be required for noticeable results to occur. Don’t let your child suffer anymore! Lead your child out of his world through Mild Autism program now!
