There are no cures for autism and there is no specific “one size fits all” treatments.

Your doctor may be able to point you in the right direction in what treatment option that may work for your child.

Some treatment options may include:

Behavior and communication therapies – Many programs have been designed to help address the range of social, language and behavioral difficulties with autism. There are programs to help reduce problems with behavior and teaching new skills. Other programs teach children how to act in a social situations or how to communicate with others. Children do not outgrow autism, they learn how to function with their autism disorder.

Education therapies – Autism children function better with a structured education program. These programs often include a team of specialists and activities to improve on social skills, communication and behavior. When preschool children get early intervention they show a good progress.

Drug therapies – There are no medications the can improve on the signs of autism but there are medications to help control symptoms. Antidepressants can be prescribed for anxiety and antipsychotic drugs are used in severe behavioral problems.

Since autism is a devastating and incurable disease, many parents search for alternative therapies. There have been some studies that report good results with special diets. Several diets suggest restriction of food allergens; probiotics; yeast-free diet; gluten-free and casein-free diet and dietary supplements.

Creative therapies – Parents have chosen to take part in educational and medical intervention with art and music therapy or sensory integration, which focuses on reducing the child’s sensitivity to touch or sound.

Chelation therapy- This treatment is recommended by few doctors and parents. This therapy is to remove the mercury from the body. There have been no studies linking mercury with autism. This chelation therapy has not been shown to be safe or effective treatment.
